mwpwmwqaZea mays è ulteriormente suddivisa in tre mwqqsottospecie: mwqgZ. m. huehuetenangensis, mwqwZ. m. parviglumis e mwraZ. m. mays. Le prime due sottospecie sono teosinti; l'ultima è il mwrqmais, o granturco, l'unico mwrgtaxon mwrwaddomesticato nel genere mwsaZea.
